WebCrossing Server – Important Upgrade for Sites Making Secure Outbound https Requests

Posted on Apr 6, 2017 in Uncategorized | No Comments

The WebCrossing server can communicate with external servers using a variety of protocols, including XML-RPC and HTTP/HTTPS POST and GET requests.

With GET requests, most external servers will respond with content-length headers. But a few servers, such as FileMaker, respond with “chunks and trailer” headers.

WebCrossing works fine when making ordinary http requests to such servers, as FIleMaker. But when making secure requests using https, we noticed such servers were not returning the chunk and trailer header, so sometime trailing characters were getting lost.

This upgrade modifies the way WebCrossing makes outbound https requests to ensure that servers such as FileMaker send us the proper headers, so incoming XML and other API requests are guaranteed to be completely received.

WebCrossing actually works great in conjunction with FileMaker. If you are a FileMaker developer and need a complete, agile, dynamic web site with social network and forum features, but still want to use FileMaker for relational database reporting, adding a WebCrossing server to your environment might be just what you are looking for!

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1328 2017-03-27.

WebCrossing Server Upgrade – Larger Memory Allocation

Posted on Mar 21, 2017 in Uncategorized | No Comments

This new build allows larger memory allocations to the SOH (Small Object Heap). A larger SOH is particularly useful for sites with a large database and a high level of activity. It helps cache items in server RAM, and generally speeds things along.

Over the years, more and more RAM resources have become available to servers, and we will continue to work on updating WebCrossing to take advantage of these resources.

WebCrossing memory allocations are handled in the Control Panel and you need true “sysop” access in order to make changes. For hosted sites we are always monitoring sites to ensure sufficient RAM is allocated, and updating allocations wherever we find an increase would be useful.

Best holiday wishes from all of us at Elliptics – and a security upgrade for WebCrossing! May you find peace and happiness during this season, and may you have a healthy and successful 2017. We look forward to working with you in the new year.

WebCrossing Server Upgrade – a small bug fix

Posted on Nov 3, 2016 in Uncategorized | No Comments

We do like to fix bugs if they turn up! This updated version of the WebCrossing server fixes a bug we found involving the lookup of non-node Stored objects in WebCrossing Server-side JavaScript (SSJS). If you are using Stored.lookup(id) or Node.lookup(id) to locate Stored objects which are not nodes, this ensures that existing Stored objects are found, and deleted Stored objects properly return a null value.

Don’t have any idea what this means? That’s ok. We think you get the general idea that this is a good upgrade to have because it means preventing problems and even possible crashes. No matter how rare, you might as well play it safe! Even if you are not doing custom development, it’s a good idea to upgrade to make sure you have all the latest fixes, optimizations and feature enhancements.

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1325 2016-11-01.

WebCrossing server upgrade – a bug fix update

Posted on Oct 7, 2016 in Uncategorized | No Comments

This updated version of the WebCrossing server fixes a rare bug. Sometimes – and so far we’ve only seen this at one site – deleted folders fail the usual existence test for folders. In other words, even though a folder was deleted, it might look like it’s there if you try to open it in a script. Since it’s really not there, it can cause confusion. And depending on what you try to do with such non-existent folders, it might even cause a server crash. This release fixes the existence test and also prevents such crashes from happening.
