WebCrossing Server Upgrade – a small bug fix

November 3, 2016

We do like to fix bugs if they turn up! This updated version of the WebCrossing server fixes a bug we found involving the lookup of non-node Stored objects in WebCrossing Server-side JavaScript (SSJS). If you are using Stored.lookup(id) or Node.lookup(id) to locate Stored objects which are not nodes, this ensures that existing Stored objects are found, and deleted Stored objects properly return a null value.

Don’t have any idea what this means? That’s ok. We think you get the general idea that this is a good upgrade to have because it means preventing problems and even possible crashes. No matter how rare, you might as well play it safe! Even if you are not doing custom development, it’s a good idea to upgrade to make sure you have all the latest fixes, optimizations and feature enhancements.

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1325 2016-11-01.

We will be upgrading all hosted customers, and coordinate upgrade timing as needed.

All self-hosted customers with valid support and maintenance contracts can download this new version at no cost.

If you are running a self-hosted site we strongly recommend upgrading your WebCrossing server to this new build. If you are a self-hosted customer and have a valid support and maintenance contract, please contact support for access to the new server. WebCrossing server upgrade – a bug fix update

October 7, 2016

This updated version of the WebCrossing server fixes a rare bug. Sometimes – and so far we’ve only seen this at one site – deleted folders fail the usual existence test for folders. In other words, even though a folder was deleted, it might look like it’s there if you try to open it in a script. Since it’s really not there, it can cause confusion. And depending on what you try to do with such non-existent folders, it might even cause a server crash. This release fixes the existence test and also prevents such crashes from happening.

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1324 2016-09-21.

WebCrossing Server Upgrade – Export / Delete / Move Enhancements for Large Sites

July 19, 2016

This updated version of the WebCrossing server updates the Export / Delete / Move panel to optimize use for large sites. If you are running a very large site you will definitely want this maintenance release.

Previously, use of the Export / Move / Delete panel was difficult for very large sites (e.g. sites with hundreds of thousands or millions of folders) because the panel took so long to open. This is now optimized so smaller sites continue to see the almost the same panel as before, while larger sites see a new panel optimized for large site use, so it opens immediately. When moving items, just enter the target location, submit and it’s done.

Another enhancement is that when moving items with this panel a link to the target location is shown, so you can easily verify your changes.

This same panel also does exports, deletes and purges. For very large sites it was time-consuming to use this panel for those features because it took such a long time for the panel to open.

To use the updated feature, click on the Export or Export / Move link in your toolbar when in a folder, click “Export, move, or delete selected items” and the panel opens immediately and off you go!

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1321 2016-07-14.

We will be upgrading all hosted customers, and coordinate upgrade timing as needed.

All self-hosted customers with valid support and maintenance contracts can download this new version at no cost.

If you are running a self-hosted site we strongly recommend upgrading your WebCrossing server to this new build. WebCrossing server upgrade – Logging and Scripting Enhancements

June 22, 2016

Automated eMail Log Rollover
This updated version of the WebCrossing server adds an automatic rollover feature for the email log (logEmail) to prevent the log from growing too large, which could affect server performance. You never have to manually backup and renew the email log again! The new default setting is to rollover when the log reaches 1 GB, and there are also options to rollover daily, weekly and monthly. All old email logs are maintained.

Scripting enhancement to cgi object
The cgi (Common Gateway Interface) object in WebCrossing Server-side Javascript (SSJS) contains valuable information for real time visitors, including referer, user-agent, query string and more. It’s an important object used frequently in customized site development. The cgi object, however, is only available for actual real-time accesses, and is not available for queued functions (functions which are designated to run in the background). Previously referencing the cgi object in a queued function caused a script aborting error. In this new version, you can now check for the existence of the cgi object, even in a queued script, and avoid this error. Need more info on this? Please contact technical support.

The latest release version is now WebCrossing 6.4-1312 2016-06-18.

We will be upgrading all hosted customers, and coordinate upgrade timing as needed.

All self-hosted customers with valid support and maintenance contracts can download this new version at no cost.

Webcrossing Server Upgrade – Export & Import Enhancements

February 2, 2016

This new version of the Webcrossing server highly optimizes the export of entire site information to SGML files, particularly for very large sites with customization. The enumeration of internal objects is blazingly faster than in previous versions, allowing you to export entire databases in much less time than before.

In addition, we have fixed a database import bug that would sometimes cause crashes while importing large databases to an empty Webcrossing server – which is a task you might want to do when cleaning up databases or performing other maintenance.

Export and import is also useful for moving or copying parts of your Webcrossing forums hierarchy around the same site, or when transferring information to another Webcrossing server.

The latest release version is now Webcrossing 6.4 source: origin/6.4-1305 2016-01-14.

Note: The format of our version numbers has changed with a change in our versioning system.

If your support and maintenance contract has expired, please contact us to renew so we can provide you with this important update.

Here is a recap of other recent upgrades:

Version 1691 2015-10-23 (the last build to use the old versioning number format) was released in November 2015 and included upgrades to Webcrossing’s server-side JavaScript.

Version 1688 2015-07-09 was released in July 2015 and included an important search stability upgrade and a fix for secure access port listening.

Version 1682 2015-02-14 was released in February 2015 and prevented the “POODLE vulnerability” and upgraded all incoming and outgoing connections to require TLS (deprecating SSL v3). There was also a fix for persistent HTTP connections to missing pages (HTTP 404 errors) which were sometimes not released.

Version 1678 2014-12-02 was released in December 2014 and added a new Unified Email Digest feature (previous versions only could send digests from each folder separately).

Version 1675 2014-09-27 was released October 8, 2014 with enclosure reference count fixes.

Version 1673 2014-08-31 was released September 8, 2014 and fixed attachment deletion and cluster attachment propagation issues.

Version 1670 2014-04-25 was released May 7, 2014 and fixed an important stability issue which, under certain circumstances, could cause a Webcrossing server process to silently quit, leaving the site unresponsive, and also added a new feature to allow guest users to visit sites licensed for a limited number of users (a so-called “seat license”).

The latest release includes all those fixes and enhancements.

Webcrossing server upgrade – Developer Upgrades

November 16, 2015

Upgrade to Webcrossing’s Server-Side JavaScript

This new version of the Webcrossing server is sort of geeky. But if you do scripting with our native NoSQL object-oriented database (see http://elliptics.com/why-webcrossing-is-so-great-for-web-development/ for background) then you will appreciate this upgrade. Specifically, our StoredArray object has been upgraded to allow the kind of enumeration (for-in loops) you can do with Stored objects, even for integer indices. In practical terms, this means you can use RAM efficient very large StoredArrays for all sorts of development, and also handle sparse arrays more efficiently.

Well, I said it was sort of geeky. But if you use custom scripts, or use plugins or our Neighbors social network platform it is a worthwhile upgrade!

This upgrade also gives provides more server metrics to aid support staff when providing assistance.

The latest release version is now Webcrossing 6.4 source: 1691 2015-10-23.

We will be upgrading all hosted customers, and coordinate upgrade timing as needed.

All self-hosted customers with valid support and maintenance contracts can download this new version at no cost.

Webcrossing Server Upgrade – Search and SSL important stability fixes

July 15, 2015

Search stability upgrade
This new version of the Webcrossing server fixes a possible server freeze during indexed site search which could occur with certain search keyword combinations if the server’s tagging engine was corrupted for some reason. The new build prevents such a freeze, returning the expected search results.

Secure access port listening fix
There were some rare cases when access to a secure port connection (e.g. Port 443 using HTTPS) would fail to connect. Non-secure (HTTP) connections would continue and the server would otherwise continue running normally, but parts of a site accessible only via secure connections would not be accessible. This is now fixed in the new build.

The latest release version is now Webcrossing 6.4 source: 1688 2015-07-09.

We will be upgrading all hosted customers, and coordinate upgrade timing as needed.

All self-hosted customers with valid support and maintenance contracts can download this new version at no cost.
